Who we are

A husband and wife crew that treats your floor like our own.

Tom laid his first floor in 2009, in a Montford bungalow that still calls us when it needs a refinish. Lena runs every quote and every schedule, so the person who priced your job is the person who picks up the phone.

We started Eco Step in 2011 for two reasons. We were tired of watching good hardwood get ripped out and sent to the landfill. And we were tired of homeowners paying twice for a floor that was rushed the first time.

Today we are nine people, three vans, and one rule: nobody leaves until you have walked every room in your socks and you are happy.

What we install

Pick the floor that fits how you actually live.

Every option below comes with the same promise: a fixed price, a clean install, and a lifetime warranty on the workmanship.

01

Hardwood that outlives the mortgage.

White oak, hickory, maple and walnut, milled from FSC-certified forests. Solid planks you can refinish four or five times, or engineered boards that stay flat over concrete and radiant heat.

Good for: living rooms, whole-home installs, resale value.

Wood looks, without the worry.

Luxury vinyl plank is 100% waterproof. It shrugs off muddy paws, spilled juice and wet boots, and most rooms are done in a single day.

Good for: kitchens, basements, homes with kids and dogs.

03

Bathrooms that stay beautiful wet.

Porcelain, ceramic and natural stone set on a flat, waterproofed base. Grout lines stay straight and nothing cracks in year three.

Your old floor, new again, for a third of the cost.

Dustless sanding, then a low-VOC water-based finish you can walk on the next day. Scratches, grey patches and pet stains are gone.

Good for: original hardwood in older Asheville homes.

05

Comfort and budget, both handled.

Scratch-resistant laminate for busy hallways. Soft, stain-guarded carpet for bedrooms. Both installed on proper underlayment, so they feel solid underfoot.

Good for: bedrooms, rentals, quick refreshes before a sale.

06

Stairs that match, trim that disappears.

Treads, risers, nosings and baseboards finished to match your new floor, so the whole house reads as one piece instead of a patchwork.

Why the name

Eco is not a sticker on the box. It is how we build.

Most flooring gets sold on looks alone. We sell it on three other things too: what you breathe in your own home, what ends up in a landfill, and how many decades it lasts.

  • FSC-certified hardwood only. Every plank traces back to a forest that gets replanted, and we can show you the chain of custody paperwork.
  • Low-VOC, water-based finishes. No solvent smell for a week. You sleep at home the same night we finish.
  • 90% of torn-out flooring gets reclaimed or recycled. Old oak becomes new stair treads. Vinyl goes to a recycler in Charlotte, not the county dump.
  • Works in the house you have. Radiant heat, concrete slabs, 1920s subfloors. We match the system to your home instead of forcing one product on everyone.

How it works

Four steps from first call to socks on the new floor.

  1. Free in-home measure

We bring full-size samples to your house so you see them in your light, next to your cabinets. About 45 minutes, no pressure.

  2. Fixed price within 24 hours

One number that covers removal, prep, materials, install and cleanup. The price you sign is the price you pay.

  3. Install in 2 to 4 days

We move the furniture, protect the walls, and vacuum every evening. Most whole-floor jobs are done inside a work week.

  4. Walkthrough and warranty

You walk every room with Tom before the vans leave. Then your lifetime installation warranty starts, in writing.

Sanding and refinishing

Drag to see what three days does.

Original 1928 red oak in a Montford bungalow. Grey, scratched and buried under forty years of wax. Three days of dustless sanding and two coats of water-based finish later, it is the floor the house was built with.

  • No dust cloud. Our sanders capture over 95% at the drum.
  • No moving out. Furniture back the next morning.
  • About a third of the cost of new hardwood.

"The quote never changed. Not by a dollar. They found rotten subfloor under the fridge and just fixed it, no phone call asking for more money."

Dana WhitfieldWest Asheville, vinyl plank kitchen

"I braced for a week of dust in every cupboard. There was none. We slept at home every night and the 1940s oak looks like it was laid last month."

Marcus OyelaranMontford, sanding and refinishing

"Two big dogs and a toddler. Eighteen months in and I cannot find a scratch. Tom actually talked us out of the more expensive floor, which I still cannot believe."

Installed, including removal of the old floor, prep, materials and cleanup, most Asheville homes land in these ranges: luxury vinyl plank $6 to $9, engineered hardwood $9 to $14, solid hardwood $11 to $18, tile $12 to $22, and refinishing existing hardwood $4 to $6.

Your quote is one fixed number for the whole job. If we find a surprise under the old floor, we fix it and eat the difference.

A single room is usually one day. A whole main floor is two to four days. Refinishing takes three days plus one night before the furniture goes back. We give you the exact schedule with the quote and we call the evening before if anything shifts.

No. Moving furniture out and back is included in every quote. We ask you to handle breakables, electronics and anything inside drawers. Pianos and aquariums need a specialist, and we can recommend one.

Honest answer: vinyl plank for kitchens, mudrooms and basements, and hardwood for the rooms you want to still love in thirty years. Hardwood will scratch, but a refinish erases every mark. Vinyl will not scratch, but when it is done, it is done. Many of our clients do both, and we will tell you where the line should go in your house.

Our sanders are hooked to a vacuum system that captures over 95% of dust at the drum. We seal doorways and vents on top of that. You will wipe a light film off one or two surfaces, not shovel it out of the cupboards.

About 90% of what we tear out gets a second life. Sound hardwood is denailed and reused for stair treads and repairs. Vinyl and laminate go to a recycler in Charlotte. Carpet pad is recycled locally. The rest goes to the landfill, and we tell you exactly what that was.

Yes. Twelve months with no interest on jobs over $3,000, through a lender we have used since 2018. Approval takes about ten minutes and Lena can run it at the measure.
